Shortwave radio has played an important role in getting news and information to remote areas. One of the great advantages to shortwave radio broadcasting is that the equipment needed to receive broadcasts is relatively inexpensive and the radio signals cover very long distances. Some seem to think that shortwave radio by international broadcasters is on the decline, but it still plays an important role in many areas.

Shortwave radio broadcasts don’t typically stay on the air for 24 hours a day. Many of them are only on the air for a certain period of time, some broadcasters only produce a few hours of showtime each day. There are some live shortwave streams available, but much of the content is available on demand.

Several international broadcasters are now podcasting and offering their programs via rss podcast. Typical offerings are in the range of news in several languages as well as informational programs along the lines of what you might find on public radio here in the states.

US Live Radio.com Another good listing site, broken down by state, links to streams.

Another great reference is Radio-Directory.com good breakdown by format, state or country of the stations.

There’s also On the Radio.net which lets you search by call letters and or proximity to a city to find more information on terrestrial broadcast stations.
