Learn German Online

I studied German in College. I had hoped to study it in High School but our schools only offerings were Spanish or French. Anyway, I think because I had some German ancestry that had sparked my interest in the language. I took it for 2 semesters and quite enjoyed it. In fact I kept trying to find the time to move onto the next level, but never managed to work it into my course schedule. (I already had 2 majors plus a bit). Anyway, I recall getting to the point where reading the German newspapers was approachable, but it’s been some years and I’ve gotten rusty of late.

The following links are to online courses or other resources for learning German. Here in the United States, the internet and shortwave radio are probably your best bets for German Language media content unless you have satellite. One of the main satellite companies gives foreign language channels as options which might be another possibility.

English is basically considered a Germanic language and there are many similarities. in fact it’s interest to compare the German and French influences on our language that came in during the Norman invasion, but that’s another story. One of the major differences of course is the use of gender articles for nouns and the different cases. German is spoken in Germany and Austria as well as Switzerland and several other areas. It is the 10th most widely spoken language in the world.
