Simply put, the most spoken language on the face of the earth is Chinese. Digging a bit under the surface the picture is a bit muddier though. Different dialects jumble the picture. Most of the resources that I’ve linked to are specific to Mandarin Chinese. That is the official language in the People’s Republic of China. Cantonese is spoken in southern China near Hong Kong. There are many other Chinese dialects though and the differences are much more pronounced than many imagine. In most cases the dialects are such that speakers of one do not understand the other dialects.

Chinese is thought of as a difficult language to learn, due in large part to the role that inflection and intonation play in the distinguishing of words.
