Another amateur handheld that’s caught my attention is the Yaesu VX-2R it’s a microminiature (I’ve read that it’s smaller than the picture appears.) It has wideband receive and transmits on the 2M and 440 bands. The output is 1.5 Watts on 2 Meters (144-148 Mhz) and 1 Watt on the 440 band. [...]

In the western part of the state of North Carolina, there’s also the Blue Ridge Amateur Radio Club out and about covering mostly the Henderson County area (NC). They seem to have an active group with a monthly newsletter online which can give an insight into the groups activities.
