More Police Codes and signals

For those of you scanner listeners… the ten-code list may be just enough to make you start to sort out what you’re hearing (although different localities may use slightly altered variations.) The same goes for “signals” I know some of these DON’T match what I hear locally, but then some do… so Here’s a guide to Raliegh/Wake county signals. And another ten code reference (Raleigh/Wake county) That first link also has call disposition codes (10-8 A adam….) which I had wondered about….

Some localities have decided to talk in plain language and do away with the codes. The idea behind ten codes originally was to have a uniform set of codes to make communication easier and harder to misunderstand. So, if the ten codes wind up getting in the way, it would make sense to review the use of them. (Since they aren’t ALL standard). However, some say that it adds to officer safety as doing a 28 on the tag number doesn’t make someone as likely to flee as doing a “tag registration lookup”… I don’t know if I quite get this last argument… frankly I think if someone already knows their in trouble for something OTHER than what they’re pulled for, they’ll be more likely to consider fleeing if they get an opportunity.

That much said… this is heading into the reference category.
