Zoom H4 Handy Recorder
I really don’t know which site this thing is more relevant to…. I’ve commented on it on the computer site twice actually. I’ve mentioned it on the ashevillemusiclessons.com site and I’ve been tempted to mention it on the genealogy sites as well as here. It’s the Zoom H4 handy recorder, a little all in one digital recorder. It uses stereo condensor microphones (in an XY configuration) for stereo recording to uncompressed WAV or direct to MP3. It also has two combo inputs for 1/4″ or XLR plugs and can act as a four track digital recorder to WAV format.
I guess this is why I’m having a hard time deciding where it is most relevant…. computer/tech (it’s also capable of being used as an audio interface…) Genealogy – would be great for archiving those interviews/stories of family members, etc. The music site – well multitracker and stereo recording of live music and finally, here…. well it seems highly relevant to podcasting and online audio…….
Well, I thought I’d use this post to just give a summary of the places I’ve been looking for reviews as well as to say that my review hopefully will be coming up soon. If I’m not mistaken it should be here sometime this afternoon. (I’ve got to say I’m impressed with sweetwater.com – I ordered Thursday, had a call back informing me of a backorder (expected) on the Zoom…. I got a shipping confirmation Thursday evening which surprised me (2 hours after the phone call.) SO, I emailed and asked if that included the zoom (I ordered a patch cable too..) I was told that the zoom had been holding up the order but it had all shipped….. shortest backorder I’ve ever seen.)
Anyway….
Here’s the sweetwater page for the zoom h4 – 1 review there currently
samash.com page for the same product, no reviews yet.

I also found someone claiming that they were able to get a 4GB sd card to work in their h4 (Transcend card). It sounds as though it worked correctly EXCEPT the header information of the wav file (4GB wav file) got written incorrectly and they had to do a manual (hex) edit to correct it. I imagine their firmware doesn’t handle coming up with the correct header information for files greater than 2GB from the writeup (translated from Japanese..) Possibly a future firmware update will solve this?
I should mention the amazon.com product page too
I’m not sure WHERE I’ll post the review, because like I say, I think this could be useful to visitors of any of my sites….. I’ll at least post an update here (or link) when I get a review up.
Almost forgot…. The Podsqod has been promising a podcast review of the h4 as has Behind the Scenes.
